Fundamental to any planning exercise is an understanding of the future state being planned for.
When planning for urban growth, an understanding of that future state is greatly assisted by being able to project the future number and distribution of residents, visitors and employees. Using appropriate assumptions, the amount and distribution of residential dwellings and gross floor area required to accommodate these people can also be projected.
As the foundation upon which the planning of infrastructure and other services is undertaken, it is critical that development projections are undertaken with a high degree of rigour and are revised regularly.
Unfortunately, long timeframes and the high cost of preparing quality development projections has worked against this outcome. Too often, local governments or infrastructure providers use much of their limited resources to purchase a one-off projections model, or to develop their own projections model in-house, leaving insufficient time and resources to prepare quality inputs to that model. This can result in poor quality projections, which in turn produces poor and inconsistent outcomes from subsequent planning exercises. It is hardly surprising that many of the models are never updated and are sometimes discarded after a single use.
If the users of development projections models could spend less time and money developing the model framework itself and focus on improving the quality of the inputs to the model, this would result in more robust and cost effective planning outcomes.
In response to this dilemma, PIE Solutions has built a high quality, user-friendly development projections model as part of an integrated suite of software called PIE Novus™. Using data inputted by the user, the projections model runs complex algorithms to undertake a market simulation of future development at the lot level. It then provides lot level projections for both residential and non-residential development over the nominated projection period.
Most importantly, the software is inexpensive to purchase due to it being offered under licence. Organisations that purchase a licence will not only have access to the latest development projections software, but will also receive training, technical support and upgrades for the duration of the licence. Clients can also make suggestions for future functionality upgrades so that our software can be continually improved to meet our client’s needs.
